We visited an apple orchard last Saturday. It was delightful. It had been years since I went apple picking, and the orchard we used to visit has since closed. This one was only half an hour from our place, though. Most of the red delicious were already gone, but there were plenty of Winesap, Fuji, Granny Smith, and Rome apples. I suppose Rome is considered a baking apple, but I like eating them plain. We only picked a peck, which will be plenty for us for awhile.
I'll probably try some apple pie soon. One of my favorite side dishes to make is apples and onions. I slice up a few apples with the skin on and cook them with a little water, butter and cinnamon with about half an onion. It's such an easy dish and the onion really brings out the flavor of the apples.
This really is the most comfortable dress in the world, and quite practical for apple picking. It's more comfortable than a t-shirt! Funny story though: the elastic suddenly gave out in the half-slip I was wearing under it! Did it fall to my ankles while we were hidden in the trees, picking apples? No, it fell off in the middle of a large crowd on our way to the parking lot. My husband was very stealthy though, and I stepped out of my slip and he whisked it into his pocket. We just kept walking like nothing happened. It was pretty awkward, but very funny. It seems like ridiculous things like this happen to me all the time, though! Do you ever have similar "slip-ups?"
