Hair Inspiration from Romantic Portraits

Valentin Serov
Portrait of Grand Duchess Olga Alexandrovna, 1893, by Valentin Serov
With Valentine's Day on the way, October has had romance on the mind. Not just romantic love, but the sort of romance that is defined by Merriam-Webster as "an emotional attraction or aura belonging to an especially heroic era, adventure, or activity." October has found some inspiring looks and beautiful hair in oil paintings and pastels from the past. Long, short, straight, curly - here are a few of her favorites from realists, symbolists, impressionists, etc.
Helene Klimt, 1898, by Gustav Klimt
Mäda Primavesi, 1912, by Gustav Klimt
Angel, 1887, by Abbott Handerson Thayer
Portrait of a Young Woman by an unknown artist (once attributed to Jean-Etienne Liotard (1702-1789))*
*Not technically hair, but who can resist the romance of this portrait and the lovely headdress and bow?
Olga Kostycheva, 1891, by Nikolai Ge
Young Girl with a Fan, 1893, Berthe Morisot
Mignon, 1869, William-Adolphe Bouguereau
Meditation, 1902, William-Adolphe Bouguereau

  1. Such a lovely post! One of my college English professors always referred to that kind of romance as "The Big R." And I have committed to growing out my bob this year, at least a little.

    1. The Big R? I like that! I'm growing mine out too, although it's so tempting to go back. I was delighted to find portraits from the late 1800s with short bobs. I think the one of Helene Klimt is very interesting - it seems like any flapper would be proud to sport that Dutchboy bob, but the painting is from 1898!

  2. I think I'm going with a lob, which is just a longer bob. I don't think I'll ever have really long hair again. I HEART bobs!
